Description for The Historic Lodge This is it, Folks! See the stories in the Coastal Living, Jacksonville magazine & Gainesville magazines here! Come vacation in a treasure of Summer Haven history. This 110-year-old cottage is located 50 steps from the Atlantic Ocean. Five bedrooms, a great room with fireplace, two bathrooms - one with an original claw-footed tub - large family kitchen, pantry, laundry, dining porch, and wrap-around porch.

Send your thanks back in time. Your stay at The Lodge, a 19th-century beach cottage near gorgeous St. Augustine, promises a historic and redefining simplicity. A few days here means renewed sense of ‘the important things in life’, chock-full of familial magic. Tucked on a sleepy cul de sac next to the Atlantic Ocean, The Lodge and its older sister The Hut are elegant and understated reminders of a far-away time.

An area known as Summer Haven was recommended to stressed Pennsylvania banking baron, Thomas Mellon, for its restorative powers. Construction on first The Hut and then The Lodge began in the 1880s, at a time when Chester Arthur was president and Mark Twain was busy finishing his Adventures of Huck Finn. This is seriously good quality time, where simple, beautiful touches - candle light and ocean breezes - complete the set.

A house with this much history begs for a multi-generational vacation where the stories come out - as family folklore enjoys another airing. Take the time on this holiday to hear the stories you’d never otherwise have a chance to hear. Reconnect with grown cousins or childhood friends - covering more ground than you ever would in a hasty holiday card.

Whip up beloved family meals - packing your grandmother’s handwritten recipes for a birthday cake made from scratch. Snap dozens of photos as Grandpa teaches the next generation to fish. Try this more genuine of magic kingdoms for real family bonding, in surrounds so idyllic they look like a movie set. Adirondack chairs wait on the wrap-around porch, where palm trees dot the view of stone breakers just beyond. Liberal touches of antiquity, such as the front porch’s restored pew bench, leave room to wonder what the walls would say - if they could talk. A private dock is charming and ramshackle, perhaps Huck-Finn-comes-to-Florida (Dock is to shallow water due to sand bars.)

Up to ten guests can comfortably stretch out over 1,200 square feet. Five double occupancy bedrooms, four queen beds, and two bunks share two bathrooms. An equipped kitchen, dining porch and a living area each honor the old with family heirloom accessories and new, comfy furniture appropriate to the period.

The house boasts recent refurbishment across every inch - yet maintains all original features. Solid pine floors and old glass windows. A claw-footed porcelain bathtub and a pyramid roof for extra air circulation. Instead of closets, enjoy simple wall hooks to keep your clothing organized - and relish in a vacation that requires only a parade of shorts, t-shirts, bathing suit and towel (repeat).

For modern conveniences, enjoy phones and cable TV. If you’d rather do without, they can stay easily tucked out of sight.

Past guests love the inclusive aspect their vacations can take, thanks to the home’s single-story plan. Older relatives who struggle with mobility will enjoy a property that has everything to hand. The ocean, just 100 feet away, can be seen, heard - and tasted- from within The Lodge itself.

Note: Summer Haven is constantly changing with nature. The Summer Haven river behind the house is largely a sand dune and can many times provide beach access. Due to Tropical Storm Faye erosion at the front, there is now an area of large boulders blocking the beach access points. Although you can walk in between these boulders to access the beach like the locals that live nearby, the nearest easy beach access is approximately 1 mile north of Fort Matanzas National Park. It has (free) paved parking and provides beach access via a meandering boardwalk. Please Note: Due to local construction, you may have an obstructed view of the beach.

Guest Rating for The Historic Lodge
We absolutely loved staying in this beautiful home yes it is a little dated needs some work on the screened porches, (but the history behind it) oh boy if those walls could talk!!! It was in a great location very close to the beach so when my grandson got tired we could be inside in a matter of a couple minutes.  It was very hot and the a/c in the main house had a hard time keeping it cool which is to be expected in a house built in the 1800's. My only complaint one would be that there was a home owner on the end of the street (he wasnt very nice to people visiting the area) was having some BIG rocks moved and basically blocked the only entrance onto the beach, we made do and made our way around them more of a nuisance being as when we rented the place it states there is an entrance to the beach without having to climb over the boulders. WE will definitely rent this again.
Lots of Charm
We really enjoyed our stay but the place is really old and needs repairs but it really is charming. Has a lot of history which was very interesting. I wish it had been a little closer to the beach it was a little hard for the older folks to go down the rock trail to the beach. First day we were their the air conditioner in the kitchen was not working properly and they replaced it with a new one the next day. Close to everything, but at the same time secluded. Would stay again but for the money I would want something right on the beach.
House with Character
House was functional, beautiful, and fit our needs well. Beach access and ocean breeze was heavenly. Some updating could be done (primarily dishwasher), but can't really complain about much else.
A Step Back in Time
My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our time at The Lodge! I felt as though I had stepped back to a simpler place and time. I spent many happy hours reading on the porch. The house was quaint, clean and supplied with everything we needed. Beds were comfortable and the A/C kept the house at the perfect temperature. The kitchen was fully equipped and we enjoyed eating some meals on the screened-in porch. I miss the sound of the waves at night. I highly recommend The Lodge to anyone who wants a quiet, beautiful get away.
Historical Pet Friendly Cabin
If you are interested in history, this is a place for you. Every corner of this property contains a bit of Florida's past. The Lodge is like staying at your Uncle Joe's cabin but instead of being by the lake, you are by the ocean. Great place if you like camping, nature, and want a rustic setting.
Summer Family Reunion at the Lodge
Overall we were pleased with this rustic, comfortable lodge. Access to the beach is easy... either a short walk and then down a path through the rocks or at the peak of high tide walking in the sand behind two other residences to get to the beach. The Summer Haven River is gone but at high tide the tidal pools under and beyond the Route A1A bridge fill with water and we caught some flounder and crabs. This old building may not be for everyone but it fit our needs well. There were a couple of broken chairs and a screen door needed repair.
Perfect Bachelor Pad
We rented The Lodge for a bachelor party. It was a perfect place to stay with lots of history and cool quirks. The sheets and comforters are really old and should probably be replaced, but they were clean as was the whole property.

Only problem is it's relatively far from grocery stores but that's not the fault of the property.
Spring Break 2014 at The Lodge
Our Spring Break was a family gathering, and The Lodge worked perfectly for us. Location was great (near many natural areas as well as "touristy" places), so everyone had opportunity to do activities they wished; The Lodge accommodated our group easily (the porch is fabulous!) and the kitchen was well equipped; we were looking for an interesting property and The Lodge is certainly that...historic, intersesting story and fairly rustic (couldn't rate the facilities as "spotless", as that is probably impossible, but The Lodge was as clean as it could be).

During our five night stay, a couple of issues arose that required calls to Vacation Rental Pros. VRP was responsive and handled our requests professionally, but it was difficult and, at times, frustrating to work through an answering service.

If you are expecting to be waited on in a hotel-like environment, this is not the place for you. If you are looking for an experience like you remember as a kid at your uncle's lake "camp", then you will think The Lodge is the greatest!

The Lodge
Good. Bedrooms were a little small.
Summerhaven the Lodge
My only negative comments were dishwasher and dryer had to emptied of their loads before they could be used. I did not appreciate folding laundry my first day of vacation. Folks before us left huge amounts of trash and empty beer bottles with pickup not being until Monday the smell was overpowering. Having made sure we left the place very clean, laundry and dishwasher running the clean up crew took our trash we had left. Someone missed finishing the cleaning job for our arrival. Call was made Saturday upon arrival as requested in our information forms for maintance: of the 3 TV sets in the house only 1 could be gotten to work. Some serious repair issues need to be addressed for location ie: unsafe porch floorboad either missing or broken, nails not level which resulted in my son tearing up the bottom of his foot our first night . On the positive having stayed with Vacation Rental Pros on Summerhaven, we love the island and this will be our third year returning to one of your properties on Summerhaven. It is wonderful to have a pet friendly enviornment both in the units and on the beaches. We will be booking for 2014!
summer fun
what can you say about a 110 year old house? you expect critters, there were some. :) expect dust, the place is old. some things didn't work, the management company dealt with them promptly and nicely. it needs new pots and pans, the teflon is horrendous. more forks, more wineglasses. more tupperware/food storage for leftovers. it was great being able to feel comfortable with friends, sand, dogs, and general hanging out. if you had to describe the experience in a word, it was homey. you feel like you are staying at your great uncle's place. we had a wonderful time, we loved watching sunsets out the back door on the sand flats. maybe one day the river will come back. we will be back. :)
Very Charming
This was a very charming home steeped in history. If you are looking for a new modern home this isn't for you, but it was perfect for us. Plenty of space, comfortable and just steps to the ocean. Rented in January and never saw more than a handful of people on the beach.
Wonderful vacation retreat
We had a wonderful time at this historic house. The location was great. We would have liked the river to be in the back of the house, but nature will eventually return it. The house had quirky charm and understandable wear, but was comfortable.
I don't think we'll stay again
Best vacation with vrp 2 years in a row
We came this year to celebrate my twin girls high school graduation , loved the house old with lots of history , beach was great , had one storm the whole week lasted about 30 minutes with high winds it was very exciting
Christmas stay
I was disappointed that this was not actually a beach front property. We had to go out the door, around thru the sand river and then to the ocean. The river behind the house is completely gone, leaving only sand and the ocean in front is blocked with enormous stones that cannot be climbed. That said, you can get to the ocean around the bend. The bedroom are small and the twin bedded room is bunk beds and the room is minute. We enjoyed the fireplace and the kitchen was well furnished. Place was not very well dusted, but we did enjoy our stay regardless, although we will look for a different property for next year.
Another great week at the Lodge
This was our second time staying at the Lodge. Love the location. Some days you have the whole beach to yourselves. Love the charm of the Lodge, however it is not for everyone. The house is very old so you have to expect some quirks. Found it to be cleaner this year than last, however there was a problem with mice this year. The property manager was excellent. Any complaints we had he was right there to correct them. The furnishings in the Lodge are nearing their end and are a little shabby. I think if they would just freshen up the interior furnishings it would be an awesome place to stay. Definitely would go back.
Very nice place to stay
This home made a wonderful vacation. The beach was a private beach so there was us and maybe 3-5 other families on the beach. It was very easy to get to town to eat or to get some more groceries. The only negative thing about this house is that the beach is imediatly across the street, but you cant get to it because of the massive rocks that seperate you. But it is a very short walk (less than 50 steps) to get to the beach. This wasnt a big deal except for that my mother had a hurt knee and the path down to the beach is a bit steep for someone with a hurt knee so she had to spend most of the vacatin at the house. But really the beach itself was worth the short walk. Beautiful beach, nice home, and a wonderful vacation all together.
Charming Piece of Old Florida
The old Lodge was the character we were looking for. Steeped in history and reminiscent of old Florida living.
We can see that the Lodge would not be for everyone, but we found it charming.
Sorry to see the river is no longer flowing in the back yard. This must break the owners hearts. The over all location is great for spending time at the beach with friends and family.
Hot water can be a problem with 7 people!! Disappointed no water behind residence as pictured! Great location
Wonderful house and could not ask for a better location. Had a terrific time.
Well kept for a 100+ year old house. Due to allergies with family members, wish the vents and ceiling fans had less dust. Overall it was great and would love to return.
We loved the home and the location. I would like to say though, that contrary to the information provided, there is no grocery store within a mile or two. When you have been on the road for 10 hours, looking for a grocery store that is a mile or two away is somewhat frustrating. Also, a heads up on the water would have been great...we killed a load of whites, turning them a lovely shade of rust.
A Dream Come True!
The first thing out of my Gandsons' mouth when he saw the wide expanse of beach behind the Lodge was, "This is like a dream come true." It turned out that the whole week was a dream come true. We loved the casualness and homey feel of the Lodge. No worries if a little sand was tracked in. There were 10 of us and the Lodge accomodated us quite well. There is as much living space outside as in. The location could not be better. Beautiful beach that you have almost to yourself. Felt like we had our own private beach. We spent as much time in the river as we did in the ocean. Everyone, from the youngest to the oldest had a great time.
Can't wait to go back!!
History at the Beach
What a wonderful place for a family vacation. After hearing about our stay last year, everyone in the family wanted to come this year. A real feeling of old Florida history. After the nor'easter two years ago that formed the new inlet, the river is different every year, and every day during our stay. Can't wait to see what it looks like next year. We'll be back - the whole family.
